The Fall- Quick and Dirty

Went to see Tarsem’s “The Fall” at the Sunshine Cinema last week.

Basic synopsis:

Los Angeles, circa 1920’s, a little immigrant girl (Catinca Untaru) finds herself in a hospital recovering from a fall. She strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man (Lee Pace) who captivates her with a whimsical story that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscapes of her imagination. Making sure he keeps the girl interested in the story he interweaves her family and people she likes from the hospital into his tale.

The fantastical story within a story is beautifully shot and slightly amusing because it is obvious that Lee Pace’s character is making it up as he goes along (made clear by facts changing and inconsistencies). This provide for some cute comedic moments but I think it may have to do solely with the fact that Catinca Untara is learning English, has big puffy cheeks and is missing her two front teeth. Sadly the actual story of the movie isn’t very entertaining and doesn’t contain the visual spectacle of the fictional tale.

Lee Pace plays a suicidal patient who tried to kill himself after his girlfriend leaves him? Barf. In the end a pleading 6 years old is enough to make him want to live. Its a nice idea but not very believable.
