The Real World: Brownsville

After years of speculation The Real World has finally come to Brooklyn. Yay?

The latest cast of 7 strangers will be living in the Fort Greene Belltel Lofts. I looked through some pics on the site and read details about the accommodations that the 20-something year olds will get to enjoy. I can confidently say “The Real World” should probably change its name. I thought perhaps the network would try to get their show shot in Williamsburg but I guess Billyburg (as the kids like to call it ) is so 5-8 years ago. Is the choice of Fort Greene a sign that the neighborhood has reached the height of trendy or thats is already over?

Perhaps if this were 15 years ago and The Real World seemed like it had some real substance as an entertaining social experiment I would watch it. I might think it were highlighting a part of nyc that most people watching tv don’t see and don’t care about. If the show weren’t an excuse to cringe at how embarrassing, drunken, sexually unsettled and emotionally under-developed the 20s could be then perhaps it would be worth checking out but I’m pretty sure a lot people clocked out somewhere between Seattle and Chicago.

I say lets take the 7 people and drop them off in brownsville in a project building with a $5.25/hr job and no access to free alcohol. I bet it would get really real then.

Who’s up for a knife fight?
