Straight Pride Parade?

In reaction to the attempts of naysayers who try to shut their music down, TCOOO Productions is organizing a straight pride parade that will coincide with the West Indian Day Parade on Labor Day. They seems to be responding specifically to Peter Tatchell, co-founder of Outrage which was established in the 1990’s as a gay rights organization. It seems Tatchell was successful in his campaign to get “murder music” off a few radio stations and influence venues to cancel certain artists’ public appearances. Among those include the, often, homophobic songs of reggae and dance hall artists like Beanie Man and Buju Banton and hip hop artist Eminem.

One recent example is TCOOO’s artist Stapler. His song “Hit Them Hard” features lyrics that, while not nearly as violent as other examples, definitely express a dislike and disapproval of homosexuality.

Jah Jah gonna hit them hard
All the men who visit men backyard”

The lyrics are not as bad as Beanie Man’s, “kill dem, battybwoys haffi dead, gun shots pon dem… who want to see dem dead put up his hand” (kill them, gay men have got to die, gun shots in their head, whoever wants to see them dead, put up your hand)”.

P.S Beanie Man claims he’s not homophobic…um yeah. I guess he must just be really misunderstood.

Its always a touchy subject when addressing artists who express themselves. They have the right to say what they want of course but the problem I have is the manifestation of this parade. Do straight people really need a pride parade?

You know what, maybe I’m being too harsh. Its totally fine if straight people want to gather in the streets, expressing pride, kissing out in the open freely. Because straight people so very rarely have the opportunity to do that. Society has marginalized straight people to the point of invisibility and when they are seen its only as stereotypes. How fearful they must feel that they can’t express their love freely in the world, that society doesn’t want to acknowledge they exist and when they do its only to poke fun at them and dehumanize them.

I’m so sorry straight people. On behalf of every gay organization and person everywhere, we’re so sorry that you’ve had to struggle all this time in silence.

Oh and I have an idea for your flag.

While white is a color that is associated with many beautiful things (snow, purity, innocence…etc) it also technically is the lack of hue…the lack of color. Here’s to you straight pride parade!

But a word of advice. You may need a banner because I’m not sure a bunch of straight people hanging out in the streets is going to look any different than any other day.

NOTE: Apologies to the straight people who I like…In fact, despite your sexual preference you’re still honorary queers.

Well I guess you’re opposed to white pride parades then, too? What a killjoy!

Ha Ha. Only if they’re wearing hoods and holding torches. Otherwise, you know, I’m cool. 🙂
