Prop. 8 Fail

prop-8539w

In one fell swoop we elected a non-white president for the first time in history and took away the rights for gay people all over the country.

Proposition 8 which was proposed to make same-sex marriage illegal (again) in the state of California came in as a win by 500,000 votes.  Articles have reported that it was a majority of black and hispanic residents that got the proposition through.  Its a little saddening that this is also the population that took part in getting Barack Obama into the White House and changing history while simultaneously taking a huge step back.

But don’t listen to me.  Listen to Keith.

There are protest and rallies happening all over the U.S.  I will be attending one, if not both, happening in nyc.

To find a rally happening in your city follow this link.

Thanks for posting this, and for helping to keep the issue alive! Olbermann is right on.

boo to prop 8 passing – it breaks my heart. but also boo to those who are claiming it’s somehow the fault of latino and black voters – i think this is pretty much bad assumptions and misinformation. there have been a couple great articles on why this doesn’t make sense, my favs are:

i’m probably going to the one this weekend, is it city hall?

Yeah the assumption that it is primarily blacks and hispanics is a subtle reminder of the racial disparity in the queer community. I think it would make more sense to say that its the religious (who also happen to, sometimes, be black and hispanic).
