Rev. Phelps hates Comic Books

If you’re not familiar with Reverend Phelps count yourself lucky.   Even knowing his name is a waste of brain cells.  Phelps is the head of the Westboro Baptist Church that promotes itself as “Site of anti-homosexual propagandist Fred Phelps of Topeka, Kansas.”

He’s been known to say things like:

  • “God Hates Fags”,
  • “Thank God for Dead Soldiers”
  • “America Is Doomed”
  • “Priests Rape Boys”
  • “God Hates Jews”

He also theorizes that disasters (Hurricane Katrina, tornadoes, dead soldiers etc…) occur because of what he considers America’s tolerance of sinners.  Sinners= homosexuals most of the time.

Phelps has driven his church members, which appears to consist of mostly his family, to funerals of war veterans and gay people or performances of The Laramie Project to picket about God’s anger.

Its seems as though that isn’t enough to fill his hate quota. Phelps and his church member are now going after comic con. Yep.  The comic book convention and all round nerd-topia.

“Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent – so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.”

Comic Con people.  The least offensive (and well defensive place in the U.S).  A place where nerds like us wish to simply commensurate and be merry while arguing the higher points of the The guild series.

Is Phelps serious? Is he really trying to argue that a magic man (who happens to be blue eyed and blond haired in the middle east)  from the sky who can walk on water is somehow more valid than a bisexual american in England fighting aliens?

Come on!

Also have you seen Children of Earth? Because you need to.
